i want to learn perl. does anybody have suggestions on sources to get started from?

read lots of perl code and you will get it. If you know php http://www.cs.wcupa.edu/~rkline/perl2php/#basedir
Also cpan http://www.cpan.org/ is invaluble, get all sorts of perl modules.
