I think you'll find compatibility is about the same between DR-DOS, MS-DOS, and PC-DOS. FreeDOS isn't quite as good for games... so I've found.
Caldera DR-DOS 7.03 is on there basically for historical reasons. I got it freely and legally back in like 2000 and I liked its included tools much better (e.g. Stacker disk compression, multitasking, networking), and all of my backups of DOS then just had DR-DOS on them. I was enough of an idiot that I acquired a lot of experience with restoring DOS from backups...

 Try dosbox!
I've been using the following to play old DOS games on my FreeBSD laptop: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1
It works really great for me, and allows speed control as well as SVGA support and Sound Blaster emulation.

I use dosbox too. But no emulator measures up to DOS running natively.
