meh. adam (and quite a few other people) has been bugging me of late to share a windows volume license. not that I don't appreciate the offer, but I don't have the need for several windows machines. If I did, I would get one legally.

ninjas are way cooler than pirates. At least we don't have to worry about the scurvy! :P

Having a legitimate copy of XP is overrated, seeing as it deactivates itself when there are too many hardware changes.

And besides, as far as Microsoft knows, it's still legit. They only audit the keys for the houses they sold them too. :).

I dunno, when I got a new motherboard in the laptop it never de-activated. I don't think there is a bigger component that you can change out. I've taken the hard drive out of a machine and put it in a new one (completely different serial numbers, asset tags, etc) and it never deactivated. it's not hardware changes, its re-installations that require activation.

I certainly don't need windows enough to pirate it. I'm sure you are aware that there are better operating systems to be had if you want something for free. If you don't want to pay for windows, then don't use it.

Microsoft disagrees with you, given the rampant piracy in Asia that they do almost nothing to stop.

I'm not going to pay for Windows to run a couple applications that require it. They went to great lengths (many of them illegal) to make it so that I must use Windows to run those applications, so I think they can just deal with it if I decide to use it on my own terms.

Certain hardware changes do require either reactivation or reinstallation of windows. For one, if your motherboard changes too much the hardware abstraction layer will fail and give windows a blue screen of death. We have a few machines in the office that are all supposed to have the same exact motherboard (even the revision numbers are the same), but when I try to switch the motherboards out, windows blue screens. They are supposed to have the exact same hardware, but windows will not boot. Another example is when I changed just the motherboard and cpu in my desktop at home, it required reinstallation, but I have a feeling that the motherboards were drastic enough to require it. If I want to, I can for the most part take a linux drive and boot it on any machine that I put into, but windows does not allow it.

Thank you for the insight, Claudiabot. Now tell me about the political differences between Gorbachev and a Cheese Pizza.
